Protein C, Functional Unit Converter

Protein C is a vitamin K-dependent glycoprotein that acts as one of the body's natural anticoagulants. It helps regulate blood clotting by inactivating clotting factors Va and VIIIa, which slows down thrombin generation and prevents excessive clot formation.

Protein C is activated when thrombin binds to thrombomodulin on the surface of blood vessel walls. Once activated, it works together with its cofactor, protein S, to break down clotting factors and keep blood flowing smoothly.

Protein C is synthesized primarily in the liver. Its production depends on vitamin K, which is essential for the final step that makes the protein functional.
