What is Uridine?
Uridine is a pyrimidine nucleoside, one of the building blocks your body uses to make RNA, the molecule that carries genetic instructions for protein production. It consists of the base uracil attached to a ribose sugar.
Beyond RNA synthesis, uridine is essential for glycogen storage, cell membrane formation, and protein modification. Plasma uridine is tightly regulated, typically maintained between 3 and 8 µmol/L in healthy adults.
Although most tissues rely on circulating uridine rather than making their own, the body maintains a constant supply because of uridine's short half-life in blood (roughly two minutes). This rapid turnover means plasma levels reflect real-time metabolic balance rather than long-term stores.
Where Does Uridine Come From?
In the fed state, the liver is the primary source of plasma uridine through de novo pyrimidine synthesis. During fasting, adipose tissue takes over as the main producer while the liver prioritizes glucose output.
