What is Androsterone, Urine Creatinine Ratio?
Androsterone is a steroid hormone metabolite produced when your body breaks down DHEA and testosterone. It is measured in urine and corrected for creatinine to account for differences in urine concentration.
Androsterone is formed through the 5α-reductase pathway, the same enzyme pathway that converts testosterone into its more potent form, DHT. Because of this, androsterone levels reflect how actively your body is using the 5α (androgenic) metabolic route.
Together with etiocholanolone and DHEA-S, androsterone helps estimate total DHEA production from the adrenal glands. The ratio of androsterone to etiocholanolone reveals whether your metabolism favors the more androgenic 5α pathway or the less androgenic 5β pathway.
Where Does Androsterone, Urine Creatinine Ratio Come From?
Androsterone is produced primarily in the adrenal glands and gonads (testes in men, ovaries in women) as a downstream metabolite of DHEA and testosterone through the 5α-reductase enzyme pathway.
