What is Estrone, Urine Creatinine Ratio?

Estrone (E1) is one of the three main forms of estrogen in the body, alongside estradiol (E2) and estriol (E3). It is the least potent of the three but plays an important role in estrogen balance, particularly after menopause when it becomes the dominant circulating estrogen.

This test measures estrone levels in a urine sample, normalized to creatinine to account for differences in urine concentration. Creatinine is excreted at a relatively steady rate, so dividing by creatinine provides a more accurate reflection of true hormone output regardless of hydration status.

Urinary estrone is commonly measured as part of comprehensive hormone panels such as the DUTCH test, which uses dried urine samples collected at multiple points throughout the day.

Where Does Estrone, Urine Creatinine Ratio Come From?

Estrone is produced primarily through aromatization of androstenedione in adipose (fat) tissue, with additional production in the ovaries (premenopausal women) and adrenal glands. After menopause, peripheral conversion in fat tissue becomes the main source.
