What is Aortic Root Diameter?
Aortic root diameter is a measurement of the width of the aortic root, the first segment of the aorta where it connects to the heart. The aortic root includes the aortic valve, the sinuses of Valsalva (three small pouches behind the valve leaflets), and the sinotubular junction where the root transitions into the ascending aorta.
This measurement is typically obtained using echocardiography (ultrasound of the heart) or CT imaging. Normal values vary by age, sex, and body size, but generally range from about 20 to 37 mm in adults. Men tend to have larger aortic roots than women, averaging around 25 mm compared to about 22 mm.
An enlarged or dilated aortic root can increase the risk of serious complications such as aortic dissection or rupture, making regular monitoring important for those with known dilation.
Where Does Aortic Root Diameter Come From?
The aortic root is the first portion of the aorta, located where it exits the left ventricle of the heart. It is a structural measurement of the body's largest artery, not a substance produced by the body.
