What is LV Systolic Diameter?

LV systolic diameter (also called LVIDS or LVESD) is the internal width of the left ventricle measured at the point of maximum contraction. It reflects how small the heart's main pumping chamber gets when it squeezes blood out.

A normal LV systolic diameter is approximately 2.0 to 4.0 cm, though reference ranges vary by sex and body size. Together with the diastolic diameter (LVIDd), it is used to calculate fractional shortening, a measure of how well the left ventricle contracts.

This measurement is obtained during an echocardiogram, a non-invasive ultrasound of the heart.

Where Does LV Systolic Diameter Come From?

LV systolic diameter is a measurement of the left ventricle, the heart's largest and strongest chamber, taken at the moment of peak contraction (end-systole) during an echocardiogram.
