What is RV Basal Diameter?
RV basal diameter is a measurement of the widest dimension of the right ventricle at its base, taken from an echocardiogram (heart ultrasound). It reflects the size of the right side of the heart, which is responsible for pumping blood to the lungs.
The measurement is taken in the apical four-chamber view at end-diastole (when the heart is relaxed and filled with blood), using an inner-edge to inner-edge technique. A normal RV basal diameter is less than 4.1 cm according to current guidelines from the American Society of Echocardiography.
An enlarged RV basal diameter may indicate that the right ventricle is under increased pressure or volume stress, which can occur in a variety of heart and lung conditions.
Where Does RV Basal Diameter Come From?
RV basal diameter is not a substance produced by the body. It is an imaging measurement of the right ventricle, the chamber of the heart that receives blood from the body and pumps it into the pulmonary arteries toward the lungs.
