What is TAPSE?

TAPSE (Tricuspid Annular Plane Systolic Excursion) is an echocardiographic measurement that reflects how well your right ventricle is pumping. It measures how far the tricuspid valve annulus moves toward the apex of the heart during each heartbeat.

The right ventricle contracts mainly in a longitudinal (top-to-bottom) direction. TAPSE captures this dominant motion in a single, easy-to-obtain number, making it one of the most widely used measures of right ventricular systolic function.

A normal TAPSE is 2.0 cm or greater. Values between 1.7 and 1.9 cm indicate mildly reduced function, 1.3 to 1.6 cm indicates moderately reduced function, and below 1.3 cm indicates severely reduced right ventricular function.

Where Does TAPSE Come From?

TAPSE is not a substance produced by the body. It is a measurement obtained during an echocardiogram (heart ultrasound) that reflects the contractile function of the right ventricle.
