What is Posterior Wall Thickness?
Posterior wall thickness (PWT) is an echocardiographic measurement of the thickness of the left ventricle's back wall. It is measured during diastole (when the heart is relaxed and filling with blood), typically at the midventricular level.
Normal values are approximately 6–10 mm in men and 6–9 mm in women. Values above 11 mm generally suggest thickening of the heart muscle, known as left ventricular hypertrophy.
PWT is also used alongside other measurements to calculate relative wall thickness (RWT), which helps classify patterns of cardiac remodeling and hypertrophy.
Where Does Posterior Wall Thickness Come From?
The posterior wall is the back wall of the left ventricle, composed of cardiac muscle (myocardium). Its thickness reflects the amount of muscle tissue present, which can change in response to pressure or volume overload on the heart.
