What is Height?

Height, or stature, is the measurement of your standing vertical length from the floor to the top of your head. It reflects the cumulative growth of your skeleton, primarily the long bones of your legs and the vertebral column.

In children and adolescents, height tracks skeletal growth and development over time. In adults, it serves as a baseline for calculating body mass index (BMI) and as a way to monitor bone health.

Progressive height loss in adults can signal vertebral compression fractures or osteoporosis. A loss of 4 cm or more from peak height in women, or 6 cm or more in men, warrants further evaluation.

Where Does Height Come From?

Height results from the growth of long bones (femur, tibia) and the vertebral column. This growth is driven by epiphyseal growth plates and regulated by growth hormone from the pituitary gland, IGF-1 from the liver, thyroid hormones, and sex hormones from the gonads and adrenal glands.
